2 lbs (900 g) beef stew meat, cut into cubes
2–3 carrots, sliced
8 oz (225 g) mushrooms, sliced
1 cup pearl onions (or 1 medium onion, chopped)
3 garlic cloves, minced
2 tbsp tomato paste
3 cups beef broth
1–2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp dried thyme
2 bay leaves

1–2 tbsp flour or cornstarch (for thickening)
