The silence lasted for 28 years. Then, on August 15, 2013, the past finally reached up to grab the present.
It began as a routine maintenance job. A utility crew was tasked with updating underground water and electrical systems near the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. The work required deep excavation in an area that had remained undisturbed since the park’s original construction. Supervisor Pierre Duboce was overseeing the dig when the machinery hit an obstruction about three meters—nearly ten feet—below the surface.
Expecting construction debris, the crew was unprepared for what they unearthed. Amidst the dirt lay remnants of fabric that looked like modern clothing, far too recent to be ancient artifacts but too old to be litter. Then, they found it: a camera, caked in earth, its design unmistakably from the 1980s.
Duboce immediately halted the work. The site was secured, and forensic specialists were brought in. As they carefully sifted through the soil, the heartbreaking truth was revealed. The excavators had found the skeletal remains of two small children.
