Whenever I whip up this recipe, the house fills with a wonderful aroma. This one’s a sweet win.
Directions:
- Prepare the Baking Sheet
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat, then set it aside. - Make the Toffee
In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, salt, and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture reaches 300°F (hard crack stage) on a candy thermometer. - Add Vanilla
Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract immediately. - Pour the Toffee
Pour the hot toffee mixture onto the prepared baking sheet. Use a heat-resistant spatula to spread it evenly. - Add the Chocolate
Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot toffee. Let them sit for a minute to melt, then spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee. - Add Nuts (Optional)
If desired, sprinkle chopped walnuts or pecans over the melted chocolate. - Cool and Set
Let the toffee cool and set for about 2 hours, or until the chocolate has hardened. - Break Into Pieces
Once the toffee is completely set, break it into pieces and enjoy!
Variations & Tips:
- Nut-Free Version: Omit the walnuts or pecans for a nut-free treat.
- Salted Toffee Twist: Sprinkle a pinch of flaky sea salt on top of the chocolate for a delicious salted toffee.
- Mocha Flavor: Add a pinch of espresso powder to the melted chocolate for a mocha-flavored toffee.
- Chocolate Variations: Swap the semisweet chocolate chips with white chocolate or a flavored variety like dark or milk chocolate for a different taste.
- Festive Twist: Add crushed peppermint on top for a holiday-inspired version.
This toffee is a labor of love, and each bite brings you closer to the warmth of family traditions. Whether you’re enjoying it with a cup of tea or sharing it with loved ones, it’s bound to be a sweet win every time.
