Slow-Cooked Great Northern Beans with Smoked Ham Hocks – Sweet, Smoky, and Comforting

  1. Prepare the Beans:
Rinse and sort the Great Northern beans to remove any debris. Optional: Soak overnight for quicker cooking and a creamier texture.

  2. Layer the Crockpot:
Place the smoked ham hocks in the bottom of the crockpot. Add chopped onion, garlic, and brown sugar.

  3. Add Beans and Liquid:
Pour the rinsed beans into the crockpot. Add water or chicken broth until beans are fully covered by about 1 inch. Stir gently to combine.

  4. Cook:
Cover and cook on low for 7–8 hours or high for 4–5 hours, until beans are tender and ham hocks are flavorful and falling apart.

  5. Season and Serve:
Remove the ham hocks, shred the meat, and return it to the beans. Stir, season with salt, pepper, and optional paprika or cayenne. Serve hot as a hearty main dish or side.
